About the CentOS

CentOS is a Linux distribution derived from the upstream source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Historically, CentOS Linux aimed to provide a free, stable, and highly compatible alternative to RHEL, often used for servers, workstations, and desktop environments in enterprises and web hosting. It offered long-term support and was known for its robustness. However, The CentOS Project, in coordination with Red Hat, transitioned its focus from CentOS Linux to CentOS Stream. CentOS Stream is now the "upstream" for RHEL, serving as a continuous delivery distribution where new RHEL versions are developed. It provides a rolling preview of future RHEL releases, allowing the community to collaborate and test features before they are integrated into stable RHEL versions. This shift means that CentOS Linux is no longer actively maintained, and users are encouraged to migrate to CentOS Stream or other RHEL-compatible distributions like AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux, or to RHEL itself.
