About the Google Cloud Data Catalog

Google Cloud Data Catalog is a metadata management service that provides a unified, searchable index of all data assets within Google Cloud, including BigQuery, Pub/Sub, and Cloud Storage. It automatically extracts technical metadata and allows users to add business metadata through a flexible tagging system. This helps data professionals, data stewards, and business users find, understand, and trust their data. The service integrates with other Google Cloud services, such as Data Loss Prevention (DLP) to automatically classify sensitive data. Note: As of February 2025, Google Cloud Data Catalog is being deprecated and will be replaced by Dataplex Universal Catalog on January 30, 2026.
