About the Gravatar

Gravatar, a portmanteau of "globally recognized avatar," is a free web service that allows users to associate an avatar (profile picture) with their email address. When a user comments on a blog, posts on a forum, or interacts with any website or service that supports Gravatar, their chosen avatar automatically appears next to their name, provided they use the same email address linked to their Gravatar. This eliminates the need to upload a new profile picture on every single website. Gravatar helps establish a consistent online identity and enhances personal branding across the web. Users can upload multiple images to their Gravatar account, set a primary one, and even assign different images to different email addresses they own. A key feature is the ability to rate images (G, PG, R, X), allowing website owners to filter content based on appropriateness. Gravatar is deeply integrated with WordPress.com and is a default feature for comment sections and user profiles on most self-hosted WordPress sites. It also supports "Hovercards" that display more detailed user profiles when hovering over an avatar.
