About the Istio

Istio is an open-source service mesh that provides a transparent and language-independent way to connect, secure, control, and observe microservices within a distributed application. It enhances Kubernetes and other environments by adding a programmable, application-aware network layer without requiring changes to the application code. Istio simplifies service-to-service communication, enabling features like traffic management (e.g., load balancing, traffic routing, retries, circuit breakers), robust security (e.g., mutual TLS, authentication, authorization), and deep observability (e.g., metrics, logging, distributed tracing). It comprises a data plane (Envoy proxy sidecars that mediate all network traffic) and a control plane (which configures and manages the proxies). Istio helps organizations modernize enterprise applications by simplifying the deployment and management of complex microservices architectures across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
