About the OSVR

OSVR was an open-source software platform designed to standardize the interface between virtual and augmented reality hardware and software. Its primary goal was to enable interoperability, allowing headsets, controllers, and peripherals from various vendors to work seamlessly with any VR/AR applications. OSVR provided abstraction layers for devices and peripherals, eliminating the need for developers to hardcode support for specific hardware. It supported multiple operating systems and integrated with leading game engines, offering services like asynchronous time warp and direct mode for low-latency rendering. The project aimed to foster innovation, provide user choice, and reduce dependency on single vendors in the then-nascent VR ecosystem. It consisted of two main parts: open-source software and open-source hardware (like the OSVR Hacker Development Kit).
