About the Xserver

The X.Org Server (commonly referred to simply as "Xserver") is the free and open-source implementation of the X Window System (X11) display server. It is a fundamental component of graphical user interfaces (GUIs) on Unix-like operating systems, including Linux, BSD, and Solaris. The Xserver acts as an intermediary between the graphical applications (X clients) and the underlying hardware (graphics cards, keyboards, mice, monitors). It manages windowing, drawing operations, and input/output for applications, enabling them to display their content and interact with users across a network (network transparency). Xserver is developed by the X.Org Foundation and is continually updated to support new hardware, improve performance, and address security vulnerabilities. It forms the backbone of desktop environments like GNOME, KDE, and XFCE.
